How to Store Coco Peat Blocks for Years Without Spoiling
Overseas Exim | Getting Maximum Value from Your Coco Peat
Properly stored compressed coco peat blocks can remain in excellent condition for 2-3 years or more — making them one of the most storage-stable growing media available. Unlike soil, compost, or peat-based mixes that degrade within months, coco peat's properties work in its favour during storage.
At Overseas Exim (www.overseasexim.com), we pack blocks specifically for longevity. Here's how to make the most of that stability.
Why Coco Peat Stores So Well
Low moisture content: Blocks are dried to 18-22% moisture — low enough to prevent the anaerobic decomposition that occurs in wetter organic materials, but optimal for block stability.
Natural antimicrobial properties: Coco peat fibres have mild antifungal and antibacterial properties. In dry, compressed form, they do not support the fungal growth that rapidly degrades materials like compost or bark.
Physical compression: High-pressure compression reduces oxygen within the block, further limiting microbial activity during storage.
HDPE packaging: Our blocks are wrapped in HDPE film providing a physical barrier against moisture ingress and contamination.
Ideal Storage Conditions
Keep Dry
Moisture is the primary enemy. Water penetrating the block packaging — through tears, punctures, or condensation — raises moisture content and enables fungal growth.
Action: Store in a roofed, dry location. Keep blocks off the floor on pallets or shelving. In humid environments, cover stacked blocks with a tarpaulin.
Protect from Direct Sunlight
UV radiation degrades HDPE packaging over time, causing micro-cracking that allows moisture ingress. Store in shade or under cover.
Avoid Extreme Heat
Storage temperatures consistently above 40-45°C can accelerate packaging degradation. In tropical or desert climates, store in a ventilated shade structure rather than enclosed metal containers in direct sun — internal container temperatures can exceed 60°C in summer.
Maintain Air Circulation
Some airflow is beneficial even in dry conditions. Store on ventilated pallets with small gaps between stacks to prevent moisture concentration in stack interiors.
